The light at Foster Harris House is best in the last hour before sunset. The white clapboard catches the warm side of the day, the metal roofs settle into a softer color, and the lawn between the main house and The Washington House holds the last of the sun.
Most guests come back from dinner around then. Whether dinner is at The Inn at Little Washington, ten minutes away, or one of the casual spots on Main Street, the walk back to the porch is the part most guests describe afterward — quiet street, the smell of cut grass, mountains darkening behind the trees.
We tend to leave the porch lights on. There's no rush to get inside.
If you're arriving for the first time, plan to be on the property an hour before any dinner reservation. Settle into the room, walk the lawn, take the porch for a few minutes. The trip starts there, not at the front door.
