About

A 1905 Virginia inn on Main Street.

The house was built in 1905, and has been welcoming guests as Foster Harris since 1984. The original architecture — heart pine floors, period detailing, the proportions of an old Virginia farmhouse — is largely intact.

01 — Built in 1905

A Virginia farmhouse on Main Street.

The house was built in 1905, on what was then the edge of the village of Washington — the first town surveyed by George Washington as a young man in 1749. The original family used the Compton bedroom as the primary; we still call it that. The bones of the house are intact: heart pine floors, original windows, a fireplace in most rooms, the kind of detail that doesn’t get reproduced in newer construction.

02 — Bed & breakfast since 1984

Forty years of innkeeping on Main Street.

The house became a bed and breakfast in 1984 and has been one ever since. Operating philosophy throughout: keep the building close to its original character, give the breakfast the attention it deserves, and let the setting do most of the work. The inn is part of The Gather Company portfolio of independent boutique inns.

03 — How the inn runs

Five rooms and a three-course breakfast.

Five named rooms in the main house, including The Washington Suite, accessed by its own private back entrance for a quieter, more private stay. Pets are not permitted, with the exception of ADA service dogs. A three-course breakfast is included with every stay, served in the dining room. Dietary needs and preferences are accommodated when shared at booking. The aim is for the inn to feel personal, not procedural.
